Siddhartha Gautama
Siddhartha Gautama was the founder of Buddhism. After reaching a state of Enlightenment, listing the Four Noble Truths, and creating the Eightfold Path, he became known as The Buddha. He was born and taught in India/Nepal, although Buddhism would soon go from India to China, Korea, and Japan.
Confucius
Confucius, or Kǒng Fūzǐ (meaning Master Kong or Teacher Kong), was a teacher and philosopher during the 6th and 5th century B.C. China. Confucianism is the philosophy based on his teachings, which contain wisdom about how people should conduct themselves in public and in their actions between each other. His ideas and teachings are contained in The Analects.
Laotzu
Laotzu, or Lǎozǐ (meaning Old Master), was a philosopher during the 6th century B.C. in China. Taoism is the philosophy based on his teachings, which emphasize ethics, inner peace, and harmony with nature. His ideas and teachings are contained in the Tao Te Ching.
Socrates
Socrates was a philosopher in Athens, Greece. Much of his teachings took the form of a series of questions, later dubbed the Socratic Method. Socrates would use these questions to poke holes in the knowledge and ideas of others. Because he didn't leave records of his own teachings, much of what we know about him comes from his student Plato.
